Plot
In a sequel to the original series, Valerie Frizzle retires from teaching and passes the keys of the Magic School Jitney over to her younger sister, Fiona Frizzle, to embark on new adventures with her form. As they journey on their heady new field-trips, they discover new locations, creatures, time periods and more to acquire about the wonders of scientific discipline, educating young viewers forth the way.
Why It's A Bad Field Trip
Alarm: Don't put in anything about Vyond, as it is common for fans to compare this show'south blitheness to Vyond.
- Ms. Frizzle isn't in the serial that much anymore. She's been replaced by her sister, Fiona; while the thought of a legacy grapheme is not a bad idea, the problem is that Fiona is a poor substitute of the original grapheme.
- Bottomless and awful writing.
- The flash blitheness is express, simplistically awful and dreadful. Occasionally, some animation frames are missing. Making it even worse is that the original press release said the series would be animated in CGI. The graphic symbol movements wait incredibly stilted and unnatural and none of the characters bear witness any sort of body language whatever.
- Tries way too hard to be hip and absurd towards kids. One episode, "Space Mission: Selfie", is centered effectually selfies, hence its championship.
- Unnecessary removal of characters similar Phoebe, who was one of the main characters in the original bear witness.
- Speaking of which, Phoebe has been replaced by a new grapheme named Jyoti, who is a "perfect" character with footling to no flaws and little personality to speak of.
- And it isn't just Jyoti who's a bland mary sue. As well-nigh all of the original students have been flanderized to the point where they all experience like the aforementioned graphic symbol with different designs. As they have none of the original personalities and individual strengths/weaknesses that they had in the original series, and are all now boring and forgettable.
- The character designs are cheap, patently, banal, and lazy. All the kids have the aforementioned faces and torsos as each other and the characters look nothing like they did in the original show, particularly Arnold and Tim.
- In that location is an unabridged episode centered effectually feces. We child you not. It'due south chosen "Waste matter Not, Want Not", same goes to the original series episode "Brooklyn!" where Arnold gets shot while wearing a bulletproof vest.
- Speaking of the "Waste Not, Want Not" episode, information technology spends a bulk of it's runtime smushing the "poop is great" message into the audience'south face by acknowledging how information technology serves equally a fertilizer and has beneficial bacteria. But information technology doesn't mention that information technology likewise contains a much larger corporeality of harmful bacteria equally well (aka, the chief reason why people throw away their feces in the showtime place) until the end. Which can actually requite information technology'due south young audience the incorrect message almost feces that information technology's actually great, when information technology isn't due to the corporeality of malevolent germs it contains. Not to mention how it'due south too a musical episode with 99% of its song revolving around, yous guessed it, poop.
- The voice acting can exist very bland at times, particularly in the beginning of the opening theme where Arnold'south phonation actor delivers the famous line, "Please permit this exist a normal field trip!" rather dully.
- Some of the concepts tin can exist practiced, only they get wasted due to the poor writing.
Redeeming Qualities
- The vocalization acting is usually adept, with some of the characters even so retaining their roles. Even Amos Crawley (who voiced Arnold in Season 1) and Stuart Stone (who voiced Ralphie), both from the original 1994 serial, return as other characters. At that place are too other well-known names such as Kate McKinnon and Will Arnett in the bandage.
- It retains the theme song from the original series (and a nicely redone version sung past Lin-Manuel Miranda), equally well as the opening existence an homage to the original serial; it is commonly speculated that the series had to apply Flash instead of CGI due to the budget being blown on getting Miranda to sing the theme vocal, though there is no proof to dorsum this upwardly.
- The adventures they continue are somewhat enjoyable.
- Despite the fact that they expect completely different, none of the returning characters have been flanderized and are still likable.
- Despite the removal of Phoebe, there is a valid caption every bit to why she is absent-minded from the series. Reason being that Phoebe went back to her old school, which is why she is replaced by Jyoti. But at the same time, this reason is poor every bit Phoebe was happy in Miss Frizzle's course.
- The prove'due south iii specials, "Kids in Infinite", "The Frizz Connectedness", and "In the Zone" are improvements over the testify with decent and better-looking animation (although the grapheme designs from the prove still remain). They also paid tribute to Joanna Cole, the author of the original books, who died in 2020.
Reception
The Magic School Charabanc Rides Again has a six.2/10 on IMDb. Despite the mixed ratings, The Magic School Jitney Rides Again was critically panned by fans of the original for its blitheness, stories, writing, characters, unnecessary removal of characters from the original testify (most notably Phoebe), and the dumbing-down of the Magic School Passenger vehicle.
Trivia
- This was the only Netflix show to air on Qubo before the channel ceased broadcasting on February 28, 2021.
